The 1st Special Forces Regiment (Airborne) traces its origins to an attempt to organize an airborne infantry battalion in the 1950s as part of efforts to contain the Hukbalahap Rebellion. On 1 October 1986 the Philippine Army's Riverine Battalion was assigned to the HDFG(A) increasing its capability.
